PRESS RELEASE:

Anthony Torrano
Solo Exhibition
NEON URBAN SKIES
CURATED BY
Carl Heyward

Gallerie Renee Marie presents the work of San Francisco native Anthony Torrano through December 2019 with an opening reception
Saturday December 14th from 2-4 pm.

Having recently moved to NYC, Gallerie  Renee Marie is particularly pleased to have the opportunity to introduce this innovative dynamic young painter to Benicia following his trajectory into post-graffiti investigations; challenging yet inviting; colorful meditations on the stimulus of the contemporary landscape, both real and perceived: URBAN NEON SKIES.

Torrano (b. San Francisco, 1992) is an artist based out of San Francisco, CA. He is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he received his BA in Art with a focus in painting and printmaking. He was awarded the The William Hyde Irwin and Susan Benteen Irwin Scholarship at UCSC for painting in 2015. His work has been exhibited around the Bay Area, notably in State Space, Adobe Books Gallery, 111 Minna, and SWIM Gallery.

"I use additive and subtractive mark making and various methods of paint application to arrive at a finished piece. The layers happen intuitively, and often times spontaneously. Some sections are tight and controlled, while others are chaotic and teetering on the edge of careless. I am constantly figuring out new ways to apply paint, adding to my visual vocabulary. Painting abstraction allows me to express sounds, colors, textures, and movement as I feel in that present moment."

"My inspiration stems from my up bringing in San Francisco. I find San Francisco beautiful and problematic at the same time, which has always provided a source for creative drive. I enjoy the sensory stimulation that the city radiates. I try to absorb that energy and release it in my studio practice. My paintings are urban, map-like situations that often evoke aerial views. They are a culmination of experiences pieced together from my subconscious memory, recalling the urban landscape."

Creating art from an emotional place can be a good thing, but the downside of working without a plan is that I sometimes wind up with too much intensity in my work.  I tone down some areas to make places for the eye to rest.  I am learning that my art is a process and what I create may not be perfect.  I try to accept this and continue to put my work out anyway, knowing that some people will not understand it.  Some see what I see, and that is enough. This feeds my passion to do more.
