S t e p h a n i e   Gray

My current body of work is a composite of all of my artistic pursuits over the years.  I have a degree in Crafts and Design from San Francisco State University.  I’ve studied many different disciplines; my interests are many.

In college I was studying to be a silversmith when I got sidetracked by textiles.  I learned how to spin fleece into yarn and then weave it into cloth.  I was also working on a teaching credential.  Life intervened…..raising and supporting my family came first but I never gave up my art.  I joined a spinning guild.  Yearly spinning and weaving conference workshops led me to new techniques and mediums.  Who knew that a three hour workshop learning how to work with gourds would lead to my first artistic commercial success?

But always deep in my subconscious was the notion that a “real” artist is one that paints.

Along the way I’ve studied Chinese brush painting, sculpture, knitting, mixed media, beading, basket weaving, color, the list goes on…….and finally abstract acrylic painting.  I find it very interesting that elements from my diverse studies work their way into my paintings creating a unique mix.  I rarely have a plan or idea when I paint.  I just paint and let it take on a life of its own.  The end result comes from deep within onto the canvas for you to interpret as you will.  My wish is that you enjoy viewing my inner vision as much as I do letting it out.
